Art therapy involves the use of art materials for the making of images, drawings or claywork for self-expression, reflection and exploration in the presence of a trained art therapist.
The art activity is not the sole therapeutic agent. The role of the therapist is to work with the creator to connect the meaning of an image to an event in his/her life and to aid the development of resources within the exploration. In this context the art works as a bridge between the creator and the therapist in promoting communication. As a result, very often poorly understood feelings begin to find a clearer definition.
